Lunch at Blunch

Blunch is the kind of little neighborhood gem that I'm always so excited to find amongst the many eateries in Boston. The thing that I like most about it is that everything is made from scratch and with lots of love and care. This is evident from walking through the door when you'll most likely be greeted with a big smile by the proprietor, Nikki. She is one of those rare people who is truly concerned about the well-being of every customer that walks through her door and on the off chance that something goes wrong, she takes every step that she can to make it right.

As you might guess from the name, the focus of the restaurant is breakfast and lunch - in fact, they are only open for breakfast and lunch. Nikki runs daily specials called the "Whim" that vary from day to day. You can also get an egg sandwich all day long or choose from a number of other things on the regular menu. My favorites have to be "The Big Papi," "The Bird," and "The Loaf." There are always delicious homemade soups to choose from and a smattering of salads. The coffee is fresh and hot and made from the best beans delivered daily and there are delicious gooey chocolate chip cookies and coffee cake to go along with it for dessert.

The location is idyllically tucked away on a tidy little corner of the South End near Boston Medical Center at 59 East Springfield Street just off Harrison Avenue. The space has the feel of a vintage lunch counter and has some lovely windows with great people watching opportunities. I especially love all of the personal touches in the decor like the red tea kettle clock circa 1956 and the hand-written chalk board menus. It's easy to feel at home and sit for a spell while you enjoy your pressed "sammy." You'll soon be swept away in a wave of nostalgia with Frank crooning away in the background.

Stop in some time and see Nikki for a great Sandwich and chocolate chip cookie, and please tell her that CQ sent you. You're sure to have a fabulous meal served up with a heap of good cheer!
